Our Team

All Sustain Value projects are led by James Spurgeon, with support provided by Associate experts and graduate consultants as required. 

Our lead consultant, James Spurgeon has over 20 years of consulting experience quantifying and valuing environmental and social impacts and dependencies for businesses, financial institutions and governments. He has undertaken over 200 natural and social capital valuation studies for companies in a broad variety of sectors.

At Sustain Value we also draw upon an extensive and growing network of Associate experts, as well as supporting graduate consultants.  This approach allows us to provide clients with highly experienced technical advice, in a flexible and cost-effective manner.

In addition, we partner with offsetting and project developers ClimateCare to provide broader integrated services helping our clients with No Net Loss and Net Positive goals.   

James Spurgeon

James is an internationally recognised expert in the field and was a lead technical advisor and a lead author of the Natural Capital Protocol.  He was also recently environmental economics advisor to Prince Charles’ Accounting for Sustainability ‘Integrated Value’ working group.

Prior to setting up Sustain Value, James led the environmental economics teams at ERM, Jacobs and Posford Duvivier (now part of Royal Haskoning), and before that trained to be an accountant with KPMG. He has an MBA from Warwick Business School (focusing on environmental markets), an MSc from Newcastle University (focusing on environmental valuation), and a BSc in Zoology from Exeter University.  

He has been the sole or principal author of the following business guides:

James is also a recognised international expert on coral reef valuation and coral offsetting, and is highly experienced in the valuation and sustainable financing of marine and terrestrial protected areas.
