<image:caption>Working together with the Capitals Coalition, Sustain Value developed a Multi-capitals decision-support framework for a major technology related R&D organisation. The project involved a detailed review of leading international capitals and sustainability related reporting and assessment frameworks to identify the most relevant set of capital assets the organisation should consider in their decision-making and funding applications. The final framework comprised around 30 clearly defined forms of capital assets spread across natural, social, human and produced (financial, intellectual and manufactured) capitals. The assets defined are those that the organisation potentially impacts positively or negatively (both directly and/or indirectly) through undertaking their projects. The study also involved reviewing the organisation’s existing impact framework and the range of projects they undertake, as well as holding workshops to brainstorm and discuss the scope and outcomes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - CSRD-TNFD and Nature Strategy - Project: CSRD-TNFD alignment and Nature Strategy study Client: Confidential global manufacturing/ extractives company Location: Africa</image:title>
<image:caption>Objective: To help a mining operation understand what they need to do to comply with the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) in relation to nature, and to scope a follow-on project to support the development of a nature strategy. Our role: Sustain Value i) investigated how the CSRD and TNFD requirements align ii) undertook a gap analysis to identify what the company needs to do to comply with the requirements, iii) developed a client workshop to explain the topic of nature and what the requirements actually mean from an operational and implementation perspective and iv) scoped out a future project to help the company implement the nature requirements, develop a nature strategy and a nature positive roadmap. Outcome: This was the second phase of the study for the client, having earlier piloted the TNFD LEAP process for them. It informed a third phase set to commence mid-2024 where we will support their CSRD-TNFD compliance and work with them to develop a nature strategy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Objective: To help pilot the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) on a range of investment portfolios to build TNFD capacity within the organisation, identify key data gaps, help shape the TNFD and to share the findings with the TNFD community. Our role: Sustain Value provided technical guidance for this FI, along with The Biodiversity Consultancy and Global Balance, to apply the TNFD and its LEAP framework to a section of investment portfolios and investment projects. To do so, we worked closely with several Asset Managers and a number of Data Providers. Sustain Value provided a lead role on developing methodologies for: i) ‘Scope the Assessment’ to ascertain the most appropriate entry point for the FI into the LEAP; ii) ‘Locate’ to determine how the investments interface with nature; iii) ‘Evaluate’ to identify key impacts and dependencies on nature (e.g. using geo-spatial mapping and LCA methodologies), iv) ‘Assess’ to establish potentially material associated risks and opportunities, including through scenario analysis; and v) ‘Prepare’ to develop a company nature strategy covering governance, targets, metrics and reporting disclosure. Outcome: The outcome was a series of internal and external reports setting out the approach and data gaps in undertaking TNFD assessments; internal capacity building; and a nature strategy to help the FI become a market leader in this space.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Nature strategy advice for a global automotive company - Project: Nature strategy advice for a global automotive company Client: Confidential global automotive company Location: Global Objective: To review the organisation’s nature strategy and provide recommendations for how it should be updated (specifically considering water, air pollution and nature) and based on both a benchmarking analysis of nature strategy in the automotive sector and review of global trends. Our role: Sustain Value developed informative guidance materials outlining how the organisation should update its nature strategy- considering nature, air pollution and water- so that the organisation can establish itself as an industry leader. This included a benchmarking analysis of existing sustainability strategies in the automotive sector. It also included a review global trends, in particular drawing attention to global regulation and disclosure frameworks such as the TNFD and CSRD, in terms of how they may affect the organisation in the future. Outcome: We produced, in a highly cost-effective way, a concise but informative standalone PowerPoint that was provided to the organisation and presented by Sustain Value Director James Spurgeon to senior members of staff. The knowledge provided will help inform how the organisation updates and develops its nature strategy in the future.</image:title>

<image:caption>Objective: To provide insights and advice to inform the senior leadership team as to what the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) is, its implications for the business and its strategy, and what steps the company should adopt to implement it. Our role: Sustain Value developed a set of guidance materials on the TNFD. This included an overview of the need for, provenance, aim, status, scope and methodology of the TNFD; a high-level review of potentially material nature-related impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities for the business across its value chain; and advice on strategic implications, including recommended actions and resources to implement the TNFD. We also reviewed how the TNFD aligns with the rapidly evolving broader sustainability reporting and disclosure landscape, highlighting links to key frameworks such as the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), the EU Taxonomy and Science-Based Targets Network. The study was in part informed by interviews with key members of staff within the organisation. Outcome: We produced, in a highly cost-effective way, a concise, informative PowerPoint report for the senior business leadership team. The output has been used to inform how best the company prepares for, and resources, its adoption of the TNFD.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Objective: To investigate and help implement coral reef finance/insurance and risk management models in four Southeast Asian/Pacific countries. These mechanisms will enable the deployment of sustainable finance for better coral reef protection and restoration in the event of hazards, especially extreme climate related incidents such as cyclones and bleaching events. Our role: Leveraging our expertise in ecosystem services, Sustain Value has developed a methodology to value coral reef ecosystem services at selected sites in each country. The valuation includes site visits and collaboration with national consultants to gather data and apply suitable valuation technique. The results are being used in a cost-benefit analysis to inform the viability of coral reef insurance and other sustainable financing models. Outcome: The project is ongoing, but so far we have developed a Rapid Site Prioritisation Assessment to identify priority sites in each country, considering a range of material risk, ecological, economic, social and governance factors. The valuation is currently being used to demonstrate the viability, help identify sustainable funding streams and inform selection of a final preferred site in each country.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Objective: To develop state of the art, spatially mapped Natural Capital Accounts for the UAE, covering a range of marine and terrestrial ecosystems and associated services. Our role: Sustain Value is contributing to the valuation, mapping and account creation for several terrestrial and marine related ecosystem services, working together with 4EI and IDEEA Group. In 2023, Sustain Value developed monetary valuation accounts for coastal protection, blue carbon, coastal fisheries and ecosystem support of fisheries. These are linked to the extent and condition of coral reef, mangrove, seagrass, salt marsh and sabkha ecosystems. In 2024-25 Sustain Value has completed accounts for marine aquaculture, recreation and tourism, aesthetic enjoyment and nature related cultural heritage. We are currently investigating a series of management, climate change and economic development related scenarios to be linked to the accounts to inform the government how best to optimise nature management for the coming few decades. Outcome: Ahead of the UAE hosting COP28, we delivered preliminary results to the client, including a methodology, accounts report and interactive geospatial maps, and presented them at the conference. The complete valuation of all material marine and terrestrial ecosystem services, along with the scenario analysis, is scheduled for completion by May 2025.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Objective: To pilot Version 0.3 and then 0.4 of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) on the direct operations (mines, railway, port) of a mining company in West Africa and provide recommendations as to how they should proceed with complying with the TNFD. Our role: Sustain Value applied the full LEAP process to all the mining related operations. This involved first reviewing a large number of freely available tools for evaluating nature related impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities. We also used GIS to map out the location of the facilities to ascertain which were in Priority locations. We linked the risk and opportunity assessment with the company’s materiality approach and risk register – considering the likely probability and potential financial implications of the risks. We also reviewed all the core and additional metrics that the company would need to disclose. Outcome: We produced a full LEAP assessment report outlining the results and recommendations from the study, and presented it to the company’s CEO and sustainability officers, as well as representatives from the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). Based on the success of this project, the client hired us for a second phase to deliver a workshop translating the outcomes of the TNFD assessment into practical implementation actions and to conduct an alignment exercise of the EU-CSRD and TNFD reporting requirements to identify data gaps the company would need to fill in order to comply.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Corporate biodiversity strategy and roadmap - Project: Corporate biodiversity strategy and roadmap Client: Confidential manufacturing/ extractives company Location: Global</image:title>
<image:caption>Objective: To develop a high-level biodiversity strategy and roadmap for a multinational steelmaking company present in over 60 countries. The strategy needed to align with EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requirements, reflect the company’s current maturity in biodiversity risk management, and set out a cost-effective plan for achieving high impact improvements. It also needed to be undertaken rapidly within a 3.5-month period. Our role: The project involved multiple components, culminating in the final strategy and roadmap output. It started with a desk-based assessment of the company’s worldwide sites to improve understanding of their interface with nature and potentially material impacts, risks and opportunities. Building on their existing biodiversity prioritisation approach, we leveraged our Nature Interface Assessment Tool (NIAT) to strengthen their approach, allowing them to implement a three-tier site engagement strategy based on level of risk and opportunity. We also undertook a benchmarking exercise, assessing 5 similar companies according to a framework of key biodiversity management indicators to establish how the company compared to peer and leading companies in the sector. In addition, we developed and delivered a series of workshops and interviews with key internal stakeholders from across the company’s worldwide operations, helping to build capacity, raise awareness, and gain insights on key successes and challenges at site level. Outcome: We developed two reports for the company: an assessment report with results from the site assessment, stakeholder engagement and benchmarking analysis; and the biodiversity strategy report. The strategy recommended 10 key actions across 5 main pillars: Ambition, Governance, Management, Engagement and Capacity Building and was accompanied by a roadmap outlining where to focus attention across a 5-year horizon. The company is now using these reports and recommendations to guide a public biodiversity strategy that will be disclosed through the CSRD.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Impact valuation for power line alternatives assessment - Project: Impact valuation for renewables alternatives assessment Client: ECO Consult for Asian Development Bank Location: Uzbekistan</image:title>
<image:caption>Objective: To conduct a detailed alternatives assessment and environmental cost-benefit analysis (E-CBA) as part of an ESIA to meet lender requirements for an 843 km overhead transmission line connecting a proposed wind farm to urban areas in Uzbekistan. Major cities in Uzbekistan had been experiencing power shortages so a reliable source of power was seen as crucial for their energy security. However, the proposed transmission line intersected migratory routes and breeding areas of Macqueen’s Bustards, listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list. Our role: Sustain Value produced an updated alternatives assessment chapter for the development’s ESIA, as the original was not considered good enough. As part of this assignment, we developed an environmental cost-benefit analysis (E-CBA) and multi-criteria analysis (MCA) based Appraisal Summary Table framework to quantify and value key impacts and trade-offs. The impacts assessed ranged from construction/operation costs to visual impacts on local households and wilderness areas and were assessed using a mix of monetary and qualitative values. These were used to compare the proposed overhead transmission line with various alternative options, including i) putting the entire transmission line underground, ii) putting particularly sensitive sections underground, and iii) a selection of route alternatives to align with existing infrastructure or to avoid agricultural land. Outcome: The assessment revealed that the proposed overhead transmission line was the most cost-effective approach considering the full range of impacts assessed. The assessment also justified certain changes in transmission line routing from the original proposed routing. The assessment was approved by the lender as demonstrating a thorough assessment of alternatives to the proposed development.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Mining vs conservation finance impact valuation - Project: Mining vs conservation finance impact valuation Client: Confidential NGO Location: Africa</image:title>
<image:caption>Objective: Despite being recognised as a biodiversity haven and habitat for several Critically Endangered species, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) in Africa is under increasing pressure from mining interests seeking to exploit the area's mineral deposits within what used to be a central part of the WHS. A conservation NGO requested our support to perform a high-level impact valuation assessment to evaluate the economic, environmental and social trade-offs between two scenarios: (1) a proposed mining development, and (2) a conservation scenario that would involve the mining enclave being re-gazetted back to be part of the World Heritage Site, supported by enhanced eco-tourism and conservation finance. Our role: Sustain Value undertook an objective and independent impact valuation of the two options to inform the NGO’s position on the matter. The project involved developing a total impact value framework with a set of key environmental, social and economic impacts and ascertaining their relative value for the two scenarios. Where possible, monetary values were applied, for example to government revenues, carbon footprints, and water consumption. We also investigated the feasibility of various conservation finance mechanisms, including a biodiversity offset for a much larger similar mine nearby, biodiversity/carbon credits, debt-for-nature swaps, eco-tourism and conservation trust funds. Outcome: The high-level impact valuation assessment highlighted that the conservation scenario could potentially lead to greater, more reliable and more sustainable value creation over the long-term. Compared to the mining option, the conservation option would likely create a sustainable economy by protecting the internationally important biodiversity and natural capital found at the site. The assessment suggested that the economic benefits of mining would potentially be balanced out by multiple potential negative environmental and social impacts, including a heightened risk of zoonotic disease outbreaks. The results are soon to be published in a report accompanied by a call for a moratorium on mining activities until a more detailed impact evaluation for the options has been conducted.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Objective: A confidential Development Finance Institute (DFI) that provides concessionary loans and grants to support public infrastructure projects in the Global South wanted to understand how a ‘capitals approach’ could support its decision-making process and how impact valuation could be leveraged to demonstrate the societal value of its investments. The project centred on one of their current investments into a drinking water supply project in West Africa. Our role: An initial phase of the project in late 2022 involved a site visit and consideration as to what a natural capital assessment of the water supply project would cover. In 2025, Sustain Value delivered a workshop on Impact Valuation and Social Return on Investment (SROI) for the DFI to explore their potential application to the water supply project and the DFI’s wider investments. The workshop involved explaining the fundamentals of a ‘capitals approach’ and how ‘impact valuation’ and ‘SROI’ inter-relate, as well as highlighting best practice methodologies for health and poverty impact assessment. We also presented a preliminary qualitative impact valuation summary table for the water supply project with indicative scores across environmental, social and economic impact parameters. Indicative monetary value of health benefits from averted diarrheal diseases as well as time saved were also presented, along with a detailed explanation of the valuation methodologies applied. Outcome: We are currently scoping a potential phase 2 of the engagement with the DFI to develop an Impact Valuation Framework and Tool to support the organisation’s impact management throughout the investment process, from initial screening of projects, to influencing ESIA data collection and scheme modification, to reporting on each investment’s impact.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Objective: Provide expert advice and knowledge synthesis on corporate net positive impact (NPI) on biodiversity targets and nature positive in marine and terrestrial environments for several clients. This included for a luxury hotel on an island in the Indian Ocean. One aim for the latter was also to provide an analytical framework for how a company can evaluate and demonstrate becoming Net Positive applying a triple bottom line capitals based approach. Our role: We reviewed literature and best practice guidance on NPI on biodiversity, Nature Positive and Net Positive to inform strategic advice on the topic. We set out what was needed for a high-level Nature Positive strategy for the luxury hotel and developed an Excel based analytical framework to allow the evaluation of the hotel’s and its associated Foundation’s impacts. Outcome: Drawing upon the literature and our extensive experience on biodiversity, natural capital and multi-capitals projects worldwide, the insights we provided ensured our clients understood what NPI on biodiversity entails, and how they should go about becoming nature positive and evaluate the extent to which they are Net Positive. A key finding was that a significant beneficial role for Natural Capital Assessments is the identification and valuation of co-benefits from corporate biodiversity offsets and additional conservation actions (ACAs) through the assessment and valuation of ecosystem services. This can help focus and target the optimum blend of offsets and ACAs to implement.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Objective: The Green Hurghada Project aims to make Hurghada a model for sustainable, low-carbon tourism along Egypt’s Red Sea coast. This region, home to internationally important coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangroves, is increasingly threatened by overdevelopment, climate change, and unsustainable tourism. The project seeks to integrate Natural Capital Assessment (NCA) and Accounting (NCAc) into policy and planning processes to better account for the ecological, social, and economic value of coastal and marine ecosystems. Our role: Sustain Value is leading the NCA and ecosystem valuation components of the project. We are developing a series of natural capital accounts and ecosystem service valuations, with a focus on tourism, fisheries, and coastal zone management. Our work includes: Establishing a policy-relevant natural capital assessment framework aligned with UN SEEA and the Natural Capital Protocol Identifying data gaps and integrating existing datasets Advising on capacity building and stakeholder engagement strategies Supporting policy and regulatory integration of NCA findings. Outcome: The assessment will provide decision-makers with robust data and tools to manage Hurghada’s ecosystems more sustainably, ensure tourism investments align with environmental goals, and develop policies that enhance climate resilience and biodiversity protection. It will also deliver training and capacity building to institutionalise natural capital thinking, helping to safeguard the region’s natural assets for future generations.</image:caption>

Our role: Sustain Value initially developed an environmental tool called ‘Environmental Risk and Opportunity Valuation Assessment’ (EROVA) The tool identifies the environmental baseline as well as impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities. It uses qualitative, quantitative and monetary approaches to compare multiple issues and evaluate how different stakeholder groups benefit or lose and by how much. The tool has been successfully applied to different mining operations, wetland/habitat restoration schemes, evaluation of alternative water sources, and evaluation of alternative tyre waste disposal options. Outcome: The tool was used multiple times by the company for informing investors and informing key investment decisions. At the suggestion of Sustain Value, the original environmental (nature) focus was expanded to cover wider social and economic issues too – becoming ESE-ROVA.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sustain Value has undertaken a number of projects for a variety of clients exploring best practice approaches and targets around having net zero and net positive impacts on environmental issues. These have covered carbon, biodiversity and water. One of the projects investigated ‘water neutrality’ for a European energy company. The study involved exploring different water neutrality definitions & principles, corporate benchmarking, and proposing a definition and recommended approach for the company. This led to a follow-up project, in which we investigated the potential for compensating for some of the water the company uses in operations in an Avoid-Reduce-Compensate approach. Our work has also involved recommending two organisations on next steps for them to establish and implement suitable approaches and targets to achieve net-zero/positive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sustain Value has worked closely with several multinational companies to develop a relatively simple, yet comprehensive and robust methodology for businesses to assess the value and costs of water. The tool enables a business to estimate the value (benefit) of water to themselves and to the different catchment stakeholders, as well as estimate the cost to the business of using the water, and the costs to society from the company’s impact on water availability and quality. The tool applies an integrated catchment approach and is based on the Natural Capital Protocol. It has been successfully applied for business operations in water catchments within Canada, Brazil and the USA.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sustain Value developed an easy to use coastal valuation tool that can be applied to whole islands, marine protected areas, sections of coastline and wetlands. It was developed through testing and applying it to six case study sites in Mauritius and Rodrigues. The tool combines valuation of ecosystem service values with market based values (included within the national GDP accounts) and non-market based societal values (excluded from GDP figures). The study also involved developing an online e-learning training qualification and providing two well attended in-person training workshops.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sustain Value has developed and provided training to numerous companies and business associations - including to many financial institution delegates. Drawing upon our project experience, we have delivered several training sessions on nature-related disclosure frameworks such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Our bespoke training sessions include an overview of the requirements and how they apply to the client, and a review of the best data tools available to obtain the relevant information to meet them. We have also provided training on how to apply the Natural Capital Protocol and the IFC Performance Standards (especially PS6 on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services). This included a four-day natural capital training course for businesses and investors in Abu Dhabi (through the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group); two-day courses for the Chilean Mining Council and a US extractive company; and many half and one-day courses on natural capital and IFC PSs. Often the courses include undertaking rapid high level natural capital assessments provided by, and through discussion with, the delegates.</image:caption>

This involved valuing a range of their main environmental, social and economic impacts in monetary terms using a number of ‘fit for purpose’ impact valuation approaches. Key impacts valued include gross value added, tax payments, wages, supplier spend, pro bono work, social investments, staff training, youth internships/ apprenticeships, carbon emissions (less offsets) and solid waste. In addition, specialist studies were undertaken investigating relevant SROI ratios for their charitable and pro bono spend (including on diversity, inclusion and anti-racism); and the economic benefits of their Covid-19 pro-bono work and media campaigns,</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sustain Value has been a long-term partner of the Capitals Coalition. James Spurgeon sits on the Capitals Coalition Advisory Panel, was a lead author of the Natural Capital Protocol and was also a technical advisor and author for the Natural Capital Protocol’s Finance Sector Supplement. Sustain Value is currently lead technical advisor of the forthcoming Integrated Capitals Protocol, a guidance framework for organisations to assess their impacts, dependencies, risks, and opportunities on natural, social, human and produced capital through a systems-thinking lens. This involves going further than ‘multi-capitals’ assessments by focusing on how impacts and dependencies across the four capitals interconnect, such as through feedback loops. As a contributing author, Sustain Value is working closely with the Coalition to write up the Protocol. We have investigated various systems thinking approaches and determined how to define and measure the components that make up ‘produced’ capital (i.e. financial, manufactured, and intellectual capitals). We are currently helping to outline the core requirements of integrated capitals decision making.</image:caption>
