Project: TNFD LEAP for a Mining Investment Portfolio

Client: Confidential

Location: Multiple countries across different continents

Objective: The client is an investment company developing mining, processing and recycling projects that produce technology metals critical to the global energy transition. The company wanted a consistent portfolio-level understanding of how its investments interact with nature. Sustain Value was commissioned to assess the most material nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities across their portfolio of assets to identify the issues most relevant for future management and disclosure.

Our role: Sustain Value delivered a high-level assessment based on the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) LEAP approach. The work combined priority-location screening and state-of-nature analysis using Sustain Value's Nature Interface Assessment Tool and third-party datasets; detailed review of site documentation including ESIAs, ecological studies, management plans and risk registers; and targeted interviews with representatives from each asset. Two assets were assessed in greater detail because of their relative ecological sensitivity and significance to the portfolio.

Outcome: The study provided the client with its first portfolio-wide nature assessment and a consistent evidence base for its sustainability reporting and ongoing ESG engagement with portfolio companies. The assessment identified potentially material risks as well as potentially significant opportunities. Strategic recommendations included a portfolio-level nature ambition, disclosure of relevant TNFD core metrics, annual land-use tracking and follow-up of priority risks and opportunities.
