Project: Biodiversity Net Positive, Nature Positive and Net Positive strategic advice
Client: Multiple (confidential)
Location: Global
Objective: Provide expert advice and knowledge synthesis on corporate net positive impact (NPI) on biodiversity targets and nature positive in marine and terrestrial environments for several clients. This included for a luxury hotel on an island in the Indian Ocean. One aim for the latter was also to provide an analytical framework for how a company can evaluate and demonstrate becoming Net Positive applying a triple bottom line capitals based approach.
Our role: We reviewed literature and best practice guidance on NPI on biodiversity, Nature Positive and Net Positive to inform strategic advice on the topic. We set out what was needed for a high-level Nature Positive strategy for the luxury hotel and developed an Excel based analytical framework to allow the evaluation of the hotel’s and its associated Foundation’s impacts.
Outcome: Drawing upon the literature and our extensive experience on biodiversity, natural capital and multi-capitals projects worldwide, the insights we provided ensured our clients understood what NPI on biodiversity entails, and how they should go about becoming nature positive and evaluate the extent to which they are Net Positive. A key finding was that a significant beneficial role for Natural Capital Assessments is the identification and valuation of co-benefits from corporate biodiversity offsets and additional conservation actions (ACAs) through the assessment and valuation of ecosystem services. This can help focus and target the optimum blend of offsets and ACAs to implement.
